Microsoft’s CTO Ray Ozzie thinks the challenge from Google, particularly its “cloud-based services,” i.e., services that are hosted and delivered over the public Internet, has been a wake-up call for the giant software firm. Quoted in Dan Farber’s blog entry, Ozzie: Google a rallying point for Microsoft, Ozzie differentiates between Google’s more public business model and Microsoft’s private enterprise orientation. A cloud-based service like GMail may not be acceptable in an enterprise environment, Ozzie notes. He also points out that Microsoft’s MSN service provides a substantial data-center operaton and presence in delivering cloud-based services.

If you search any commercial phrase in blog search leader Technorati.com, you’ll likely find that many, if not most, of the search results take you to spam blogs, or “splogs” as some call them. These sites look like a regular blog at first glance, but are easily identified by republished or even gibberish content, keyword titles, spammy links, generic design, and lack of identifying info.

In Day 3 of the Westhost outage, WebmasterWorld is still running at SearchEngineWorld.com – the huge archive of posts aren’t there, but there’s discussion of the Google Jagger update and many other topics. Rumor has it that the servers in Westhost’s downed datacenter are being moved to a new location (we hear there’s a Starbucks with WiFi nearby ;) ) and will be online Friday afternoon, but considering the recent reliability of Westhost’s time estimates we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

More than 24 hours after the outage (apparently caused by multiple router failures at web hosting firm Westhost), WebmasterWorld.com remains off the Web. Temporary camp has been set up at SearchEngineWorld, so drop by and say hi.

Wednesday morning, the outage at WebmasterWorld continues – it looks like all of Westhost, the datacenter that hosts the site, is down. No explanation from Westhost yet, but in the past brief but total outages have been caused by major router failure or a problem with the main connectivity provider.
