Extreme Community-Generated Content

We are smarter than meWeb 2.0 is all about user created content, and a new project, We Are Smarter Than Me, aims to take that concept a step farther. The project will let thousands of community efforts write a book on the topic of “on how the emergence of community and social networks will change the future rules of business.”

The book will be created wiki-style. I don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t work - often, business books are compilations of articles or chapters by different authors anyway.

I do wonder about the issue of keeping the book tight and focused. With a lot of contributors, I see the possibility of too MUCH content being generated. The initial invitation list includes,

  • Wharton Business School: 675,000 invitees
  • MIT Sloan School of Management: 400,000 invitees
  • Pearson: 500,000 invitees
  • Shared Insights: 250,000 invitees
  • Obviously, only a tiny fraction will participate, but a book seems like a small canvas for so many painters. It will be interesting to see if any logistics issues develop as the project goes forward.
