A German court has ordered Germany’s Wikipedia, wikipedia.de, shut down, apparently as a result of a privacy lawsuit. German-language notice here: wikipedia.de, and discussion at WebmasterWorld.
This seems like a bizarre result - if indeed an individual’s privacy rights were violated (which is by no means clear), then why on earth shut down the whole operation and not just order the offending data be removed?
As the press digs into this, we’ll no doubt learn more - this certainly doesn’t make Germany look like a leader in Internet legal matters.
