Way back in March, I evaluated an XV6700 smart phone from Verizon. I liked it almost enough to keep it - I liked its screen better than its pancake-style competitors, I was starting to get used to the slideout keyboard, and I was able to get its “unsupported” laptop tethering capability to work. I was able to connect to the Internet at decent speeds everywhere I went, including airports, offices, hotels, etc. I avoided having to connect to both free and paid WiFi hotspots with their attendant security risks. The only thing that kept me from keeping the XV6700 was the supposedly imminent release of the XV6800, which is sleeker and lighter, has more memory, comes with Windows Mobile 6, and has other improved features. At the time, photos of the XV6800 had already been making the rounds of tech blogs, and I was reluctant to stick with the 6700 and find it obsoleted after getting only a few days into a two-year contract.
April, May, and June have come and gone… Not only has Verizon not introduced the XV6800 yet, but they missed a golden opportunity to capitalize on the Apple iPhone hoopla. In the weeks prior to release of the iPhone, Verizon could have been promoting its own big-screen smart phone and playing up the fact that the XV6800 includes a real keyboard. When the iPhone began shipping, Verizon could have been pushing for side-by-side comparisons, not just of the hardware but of broadband network coverage, too. Unfortunately, they did none of this. And unlike Apple, they have done nothing to build anticipation for the product. Indeed, store personnel are given no clue as to when they’ll see the XV-6800. If Verizon follows their typical practice, store staff will be briefed only a week (or two at most) before the units arrive in stores.

Sprint did manage to get its version of the same phone (manufactured by HTC), the Mogul, out the door in a slightly more timely manner than Verizon. Their high speed network also suffers by comparison, though, when compared to Verizon. Theirs is the version illustrated here.
I assume that the XV6800 will eventually stumble into the Verizon product lineup. Unfortunately, in the months since the product was announced, Verizon has probably lost customers who didn’t want to wait to a plethora of other smart phones. Had Verizon been proactive and announced a precise release date (preferably earlier than now), as well as articulated the advantages of the VZ6800, they might have taken some share from their competition. I’m not suggesting that Verizon could pull off what Steve Jobs orchestrated with the iPhone - overnight lines at stores, and hundreds of thousands of units blowing out in the first day - but I don’t think their blanket of secrecy served them well in this case.

There is speculation (possibly just cynical grumbling) that Verizon is waiting for their inventory of XV6700s to be consumed before they roll out the new phone…
Comment by Eric 07.10.07 @ 4:18 pmIf 6700 inventory was the issue, you would expect them to run some kind of blowout deal to clear ‘em out. I think the potential XV6800 buyer won’t settle for a Blackberry or Treo, and Verizon is likely to lose the customer to Sprint or AT&T. I’m in an area where only Verizon has high speed service right now, but the majority of buyers DO have options.
Comment by rogerd 07.10.07 @ 8:52 pmYeah… a lot of us are in the same boat.
I am fully prepared to put my money on the line for an XV6800 and give my terrific LG to my wife. (But because of Verizon delays, I had to buy her a cheap pre-pay for a couple of months.)
Won’t buy an OLD XV6700 at the point, no matter what the price. OLD = OLD…. Switching carriers is always an option.
(Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they were following this thread…?)
Comment by MkeT 07.15.07 @ 9:42 amThe only thing keeping me on Verizon and waiting for this phone this long is the quality of the CDMA network and the lack of real killer device from the Cingular camp. Verizon’s been absolutely rock solid for me and my wife and other Verizon customers I’ve spoken with echo that, but ATT/Cingular customers on the other hand can’t seem to say the same (I am a former ATT customer.) Still, Verizon is indeed the SLOWEST of all carriers when it comes to releasing new handsets.
I was just in Europe (10 major cities in 3 weeks) and I was amazed at the breadth of devices they have available to them and the competitive landscape of carrier services to go along with it. The Hermes and Titan have been in use by Europeans for some time now. They have a hard time believing the US, as tech savvy as it is, puts up with this oligopoly.
I am teetering on the edge of switching to ATT having seen an iPhone in action on my return trip. Some guy on the plane back from Amsterdam had one (had just picked it up prior to leaving on his trip) and he absolutely raved about it, claiming it’s the best PHONE he’s ever owned, let alone a good IPOD, mobile wi-fi brower, etc. He wasn’t a Macphile and just loved the device on the basis of it’s features and functions. So I’m really on the fence now and as someone stated, I can bet many Verizon and Sprint customers account for the ATT customer sign-up for the iPhone. Verizon better get their act together soon. They can forget about cleaning out their XV6700 stock — those savvy enough to consider this device should already be educated on its issues and simply waiting on the XV6800 or a move to ATT and the iPhone.
Comment by Bruce R 07.15.07 @ 4:21 pmEverything you said is completely on point, except for the fact that you are far too nice. Verizon, for all the advantages of their CDMA network, is a company full of clueless morons when it comes to devices.
I swear I feel like driving down to their local satellite store and cursing someone out just to get it off my chest. I’ve had the money on hand ready to buy the 6800….for the past 6 months. Verizon just what the %&@$%! is the hold up now?!?!?!?!?
Comment by JRM 07.23.07 @ 5:00 pmLike the rest of you here - I’m tired of waiting for the 6800 to surface on Verizon. AT&T will surely put some of the money they’ve made off the iphone into their 3G network - and there’s talk of a new iphone that supports 3G…..i’m thinking my days with Verizon are numbered
Comment by mk 07.24.07 @ 2:01 pmI’ve been in the same boat since the beginning of the year as well. My phone was stolen from a gym locker and I looked into buying a new smartphone, since my 2-year contract had run out.
I’d originally had a moto v710, before cashing in on the bluetooth class action lawsuit. Switched up to the LG vx9800, which was slightly better - teetering on smartphone capabilities without costing an arm and a leg like a Treo.
This is the first phone (aside from the xv6700) that I’ve truly thought surpassed the shitty Verizon phone stigma, but alas, it will never come out.
I asked a Verizon store manager about its release date, getting a response of “We don’t know when they’re going to release it - last I heard, they were still testing it and getting all of the kinks out, but it won’t be coming out anytime in the foreseeable future..”
Oh to live in Japan…
Comment by Dave 07.24.07 @ 3:05 pmI echo the *&^%$#@!above! There is no other choice but Verizon in my area. If there were I would be gone. I’ve been waiting six months for this phone. If there were ANY communication about it, or ANY explanations about the reason for the delay I would likely understand. But I just feel like we are being played and that Verizon is displaying either its incompetence or its contempt for its customers. Or both.
Comment by Henry 07.24.07 @ 3:30 pmYou nailed my thoughts exactly. Verizon has got to be the dumbest company on the planet. Talk about dropping the ball! If I were to write my thoughts on this debacle, I would have written exactly what you wrote. Sorry Verizon, I’ve switched to Sprint to get the phone you should have launched months ago. Sucks to be you!
Comment by Todd 07.27.07 @ 10:44 amGood bye Verizon!
Hello Sprint!
The 6800 to me may be dated as well after release. Balckberry overhauled its look and from teh pictures it looks like the 6800 is bigger than the 6700. While I like “new” items I may actually skip the 6800 as long as the 6700 holds up. Mobile 6.0 heh. 5.0 is working fine and siince M$ has fixed the Mobile support for Vista the last few patches I haven’t had any issues.
Comment by Shane R Doyle 07.29.07 @ 11:42 amAccording to Verizon’s business folks (as of today 7/31/07 @ 11:40 am ET), Verizon is looking to deliver the 6800 in September or October of 2007. Their claim is that they are trying to make sure their Bluetooth DUN works right - which worked great on the VX8100, by the way - as well as the GPS security of their devices. Granted, this could be just them making excuses, but they have a very slow code edit/release/test process for their devices, so that’s what’s slowing them down. But, as of today, it looks like October for the 6800. I’d be happy if I had WM6 and more memory on my 6700, but it doesn’t totally suck.
Comment by Paul J Manoogian 07.31.07 @ 10:44 amWow, if that’s the case, Paul, I might have to change networks. Funny that Sprint could release theirs in a much more timely manner. The Kaiser might release before Verizon XV6800, too. Thanks for the info - I kind of hope the person you talked to was poorly informed!
Comment by rogerd 07.31.07 @ 12:37 pmI was hoping to see a post like that Paul. Finally SOMEONE has given me a ballpark figure for a release date. My 2-yr is up in September, and while my phone is barely hanging on as it is, hopefully I can hold out until October, worst case. I figure by September there will at least be a definate release date set, if not a release of the phone that month, though I know that’s what people have been thinking since March….
Comment by Franky G 07.31.07 @ 2:08 pmWell, without giving too much away, I’m certain they weren’t poorly informed, though I’m ALSO hoping the dates are wrong. Admitedly, this particular group of guys was talking to my company and they know better than to play games when delivering dates with us (we’re a top 50 company). But I still hope their wrong… for all of our sakes!
You’ll have to let me know what you decide! It’s funny, but I was JUST going to blog something about this. I’m glad you did, and I’m glad my Verizon rep had that info prepared at just the right time!
For those who are worried about their contracts, I have just recently learned that they are pro-rated. So if you have only a few months left you will only have to pay a small portion of the $175 early term fee.
In corporate stores in Mass, they have pulled the 6700 out of the display but a store manager told me that they are still being shippped a half dozen or so a week. That would seem to be contradictory if they are trying to get rid of stock. Maybe they are trying to not run out of 6700’s until they can release the 6800 in the fall.
Ahhh, so frustrating…
Comment by Jim D 07.31.07 @ 6:53 pmWhat more can be said. V is notorious at this, this shouldn’t shock me, and yet, this is just outrageous. @rogerd - excellent point about the Kaiser. By the time this phone is released, it’ll just about be outdated. Yet I stick around, because I know what I’m getting in terms of a network. V would be much better served to realize EQUIPMENT MATTERS, and not just rest on the laurels of their network. After all, what good is a network if you have crap to use it with? What incentive would folks have to go to AT&T if Verizon were one step ahead on phones, instead of vice versa?
RAAAAAAHHHHHH@)!#($)(@#*%)@(#*%R)(@#*%(!*#()%!
okay I feel better.
Not really.
Release the damn phone already!
Comment by BigT 07.31.07 @ 6:54 pm4 months ago I purchased the XV6700 only to discover an array of software glitches; like the wireless sync will not fully backup the contact data. In fact, there are numerous data fields on the device that are MISSING from the wireless sync data fields. So, for those thinking you were fully managing your contact list think again. Tri-level Verizon techs have spent hours with me, often times exceeding 5 -7 hours trying to make me believe that my computer needs to have programs erased and reloaded, only to now really screw up the operation of my outlook. Just this morning, July 31, 2007 I wrote to Verizon via email with regard to a recent advertisement to save $100.00 on a PDA phone? WHAT, save good money on a PDA that won’t allow you to save your contact data? Step up to the plate Verizon, cut your losses before some of us start a class-action suit for purposely trying to unload a device littered with problems! DUMP THE XV6700 and tell us that you have solved AT LEAST this problem for its replacement. If I didn’t have a large customer base and family that used Verizon, I’d switch providers in a HEART BEAT!
Can you imagine, I was told by a Verizon representative that the company is holding off on releasing the phone to build HYPE!- WHAT HYPE- no one knows about this phone!
No advertising. No wet your whistle snippets of a greater-than-sliced-bread hoopla. If there was a time to build HYPE – it was during the introduction of the iphone. Makes you feel ashamed to say you are a Verizon customer. Situation seems HOPELESS.
As we say in the Navy SEALS- SNAFU!
Ha, that building hype line is hilarious. Apple build hype with the iPhone with a cool product design and a well-orchestrated publicity campaign. Sprint has already had the same phone as the 6800 out for weeks. I can guarantee nobody is going to be camping outside the Verizon store the night before the XV6800 releases. The real question is whether there will be any demand left by the time it actually does release.
Comment by rogerd 08.01.07 @ 6:48 amNope… Verizon played it right. The iphone hoopla will die down and people will see that while it’s a super product with super duper marketing, it still has serious limitations. Why go head to head against irrational market frenzy? A little time has passed, people will recover from the inevitable marketing stupor that trails behind impulse purchasing and realize that it’s just another phone…
Enter the XV6800…rational, balanced, loaded with real features for real people that need to get real things done. Nice…
Please someone explain the rational for attempting to sell a broken phone at bargain basement prices without disclosure of the equipment failures that the predecessor to the XV6800, the XV6700 presently plagues the PDA phone. Why sell broken phones, and then make those that got taken feel terrible after Verizon launches the replacement, (XV6800)? Why create distain amongst loyal customers? This is the right way to enter the market with the apparent fix to the existing XV6700 problem after ensuring more bad phones get off the storage shelves? Sounds like bad management and smells like the ingredients for disaster!
Comment by AP 08.01.07 @ 2:16 pmI have been for over 2 years with Vzw, great covarage, good service…
So I decided to upgrade my lg 9800 and bring another line of service (other family member with sprint…my original carrier since 1997). Well
started reading…6800 got my interest… waiting on July 17th-nothing… well
I am happy to say I have 2 sprint phones (and yeah somehow I ended up with FREE 6800) from sprint folks…
Sprint coverage is WORSE in my area, but i wen from ~95/mo bill to $35(sero), free 6800 and now calls to “mama” is free…
Would love to have the same phone in VZ, but my 30 days trial with sprint is up in a week, so goodbye VZ, hello sprint…
I’ve had a 6700 for over a year now… I’ve been waiting for the 6800 for some time…. Now I’m reading press about the kaiser (possibly coming to att/cingular as the 8925). Some one hinted that verizon may miss the boat by releasing this phone when even better alternatives are just on the horizon…. At this point I am going to wait… if verizon hits the 6800 first, or if some one else gets the kaiser first I’ll move carriers….
I also heard rumors of a CDMA version of the touch that will support evdo (HTC Vogue?) …
I’m just frustrated with waiting and would love for one of the newer HTC models to come stateside on verizon or even att/cingular at this point.
Comment by Jeff 08.02.07 @ 5:41 pmI spoke to my Verizon Business Rep. Verizon is releasing the XV6800 mid-August.
Comment by Vinny 08.03.07 @ 10:23 amXV6800 Will not be in stores till December 13th 2007
Comment by Alex 08.03.07 @ 10:49 amThat seems to conflict with the leaked (but accurate, one hopes) Verizon product roadmap that calls for an August release.
Comment by rogerd 08.03.07 @ 11:32 amTo breathe new life into your 6700, do a google search for “6700 AKU 3.5″ (without the quotes). My phone runs a lot faster and has a lot of the issues solved now. It’s a shame that Verizon is still selling the phone and yet not officially supporting it. The AKU makes a huge difference.
Comment by Jamie 08.09.07 @ 12:49 pmI have just started reading about the xv6700 and 6800. What are the big upgrades and problem fixex every one is waiting on? I’m not a tech guy so explain in plain english please. Thanks.
Comment by Kevin 08.09.07 @ 4:41 pmKevin, the big delay is in the introduction of the 6800. It has been rumored since winter, and was supposedly scheduled to be introduced in June. The latest date is August 15th - we’ll see.
Comment by rogerd 08.09.07 @ 8:52 pmThe reason Verizon got held up on this phone was that Broadcom sued Qualcomm for patent infringement on some of the high-end processing chips Qualcomm had embedded in several phones (including HTC’s 6800 line). The law suit ruled in favor of Broadcomm, effectively halting all sales in the United States of any phone containing the chips, so Qualcomm filed a petition to the government which gives the government 60 days to review and the President can veto the court decision. Unfortunately, the government found no flaw with the patent ruling in Broadcomm’s favor, so around July 17th, Verizon made a deal with Broadcomm to pay them $6 per handset sold (up to $200M dollars), with the caveat that Verizon would drop their support of Qualcomm in their petition. So Qualcomm can now sell phones to Verizon, but Broadcomm will go after Qualcomm for additional damages.
This is where the delay comes from. The move was just made in July, so August would be an excellent delivery timeframe, but ultimately, Verizon is not to blame. This news has been all over the web - follow the various threads on Engadget.com.
Comment by Derek 08.10.07 @ 6:09 amI agree with everything everyone has said so far! I love Verizon’s data network, but their support ofr PDAs as phones basically sucks! I currently have the treo 700W and have even tried out the 700WX (which I admit is a bit better). The phone quality stinks. I constantly update the cell tower info, so I know I’m not behind the curve there. I joke with the verizon reps that I should simply connect the phone to my laptop and make Skype calls - they would be better quality
It’s actually kind of good that VZW is taking their sweet time releasing the XV6800, which is now slated to be released some time in October. This means that it’s more likely that Apple/ATT will release (or be close to releasing) a 3G iPhone at which point its going to be, “Goodbye VZW! Hello AT&T and iPhone!” If there was more of a gap in release, I probably would stay with VZW, but if their releases are close together, I’m just going to get an iPhone. Methinks that by that time, we’ll be seeing some seriously awesome hacks for the iPhone (like easier unlocking), more or less getting rid of its limitations (sans the occasionally buggy touchscreen). At that point, VZW can lick my b#@ls.
Comment by Ben C 08.16.07 @ 2:00 pmIn case you missed it in my last post, the XV6800 won’t be seeing VZW stores until OCTOBER. Check it out at Engadget Mobile.
Comment by Ben C 08.16.07 @ 2:13 pmI think Sprint will introduce the PPC-6900 before Verizon releases the 6800. VZW Suks
Comment by Sean 08.21.07 @ 9:42 amWell I caved and bought an iPhone this past Sunday. I bought one for my wife on Saturdaym and after configuring it and playing with it, I just caved. After 9 years with Verizon and the last 1yr 8mos with the XV 6700. I was waiting and waiting for the 6800 and thought it would arrive anyday and be a decent substitute until iPhone released the 3G model and ATT shored up their network. So I get home (lower Manhattan), and the only place I can get signal on the iPhone in my pad is standing right next to the window. Walk into the LR and the call gets dropped (fewest dropped calls my ass!). So I love this device. I’m raving about it to people and can’t wait for some software improvements (including at least a f*&^ing task list). Then I’m at the gym this am talking about iPhone with my trainer and he reminds me that in a couple of months the 3G should be out and it’s a phone, so I should have signal. That logic gets my neurotransmitters racing. So I get home and call VZW to switch back. They waive my $175 early termination fee and offer me either a free phone or 2 months free service. I ask about the 6800 and get the “we don’t know anything about unannounced products.” So I take the two months and get a plan that’s not as good a deal as the 1350 minute one I was grandfathered into. After the call I feel so much better that I have a phone that will actually work and dream of upgrading to the 6800, which leads me to this forum where I am now posting. I am disappointed that I have to wait til October. But after all this time, it’s not that bad. Finally, throughout the day, I mourned not having that sleek iPhone to hold and proudly display, but logic is winning over. The bad news for VZW is that at some point, probably in the next 1/2 year they will lose me again to iPhone (unless 6800 is a big improvement over 6700). Goodnight!
Comment by james 08.22.07 @ 10:52 pmYou must have great willpower, James, to return a shiny new toy like an iPhone. Of course, not being able to make calls in your house is kind of a deal-killer. Good luck with your return to Verizon, and I hope you get a chance to check out the 6800 soon!
Comment by rogerd 08.23.07 @ 7:40 amI have been a VZW customer for years and have used the XV6600 for over two years and have enjoyed it very much. I didn’t bother going with the 6700 because it was still Windows Mobile 5 and didn’t see the benefit of an upgrade. I will be one of the first in line for the 6800. I am waiting patiently for the 6800 because the 6600 work fine. I will not switch from the one company that has by far the best coverage in my area and the fastest data network. The iPhone doesn’t interest me as I’m hooked on Windows Mobile units.
Comment by Tom 08.27.07 @ 7:41 pmMy company just allocated a chunk of money for a technology efficiency fund for over 125 employees to buy new phones/pdas and Verizon is losing customers by not releasing the 6800! Come on Verizon get in the game. I have been a loyal customer for my last 3 phones but you are killing me…
Comment by Jack 09.03.07 @ 1:11 amI agree with Tom, I’ve had a 6600 for a couple of years. Verizon has a good network but definately slow in adopting the newer stuff. I’m waiting for the 6800 and only hope they release it soon.
Comment by Brian 09.05.07 @ 3:20 pmI’ve got a 6700, and breathed new life into it with the windows media 6 os upgrade hack on ppcgeeks.com …it works flawlessly after 2 weeks. SO much better/cleaner/cooler…like getting a new phone.
get it here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?s=c807155687a4bfadcf0c48a1f37c65ea&t=7671
Comment by max power 09.05.07 @ 6:27 pmNow that Apple dropped the price of the iPhone by $200, the 6800 is seeming less relevant to me. I’ve been waiting for the 6800 since last year. Verizon…shame on you
Sprint…here I come.
So… I hear October is the new target month.
Does anyone have any more specific information than that? (read: Date)
I got a call from VZW yesterday. My 2yr contract expired back in June, and so I have been patiently waiting it out for a new handset (this handset!). Anyway they called, and tried to rope me back in to another contract/phone. Basically I said “No thanks! Please keep me as I am - monthly” I intend to stay that way until I can get my hands on this phone.
So, if anyone has any more info about a release date, you would make me a happy man if you shared.
Comment by kchendricks 09.13.07 @ 2:44 pmI was just up on the VerizonWireless site and the XV6700 is marked ‘Out of Stock’.
I’ve been waiting around for the 6800 since March too, and my current cell phone just barely functions due to a software disaster caused by the battery popping off when dropped during an update.
I echo the issues with AT&T’s practices and limited coverage issues (before the merger with Cingular) - VZW cured those problems. I even received a settlement from the class action suit about their disconnect practices at that time (they charged me the full month even tho I canceled three days into it), though they made out like bandits because the average settlement was less than 1/3 of the actual loss to the victims, and they must be ahead 50% even after atty fees and costs.
The hope, of course, is that they finally DO push the XV6800 out the door. I’d want to see the initial reviews before jumping tho. They crippled the XV6700’s network capability initially, tho they eventually cured that problem due apparently to the reviews that picked this up (PC Mag in particular) and perhaps those who bailed screaming.
Comment by jethawk 09.22.07 @ 1:22 pmI was just at VZW’s site as well and noticed no more xv6700 in stock. I hope that they don’t resupply the same old phone but release the new phone asap.
Comment by Tom 09.24.07 @ 12:46 pmMy VZW biz rep told me the real problem has been WM6. MS has given them 5 builds and each has had too many quality problems forcing the phone to require soft resets after locks. I hate to say this, but i belive it. THe rep said they understand everyone’s anger and frustration at delays, but releasing a phone that locks all the time will cause them more pain than people leaving because of the wait. They get blamed and MSFT gets off easy. They said when MS can give them a stable build they will release it. They get so many phones back with firmware flashes gone bad that they have to release a phone that works with the rom that it ships with. Can’t say as i blame them - i want the darn os to work out of the box. I’m so tired of bad roms and resets. If anyone updated to 1.22 of the treo 700 you know what i mean…the phone is pos now thanks to the crappy firmware release.
Comment by Kirk 09.24.07 @ 10:01 pmSo are the other wireless companies having the same problems with their versions of the phone?
Comment by Tom 09.25.07 @ 9:53 amxv6700s are again in stock on Verizon’s website…
Comment by Andy 09.26.07 @ 10:56 amDarn, that’s too bad, Andy. Maybe they found a few boxes back in the warehouse, or had some returns from local offices. Either way, that takes a bit of the pressure off for introducing the 6800.
Roger
Comment by rogerd 09.26.07 @ 11:09 amWell I’ve been having co many problems with my 6700 that I went to the Verizon store in Soho and became chatty with a couple of Tech people and they showed me pics the upcoming phones and they have the Dummy for the 6800 in the store but now on display. Also, they do not sell the 6700 anymore in that store b/c I tried to buy a replacement battery and was told they don’t carry it since they no longer sell the phone.
Anyway, it seems like the 6800 release is near. Hopefully I can send my 6700 back and they give me the 6800 b/c my keyboard doesn’t work properly anymore in addition to other problems.
Comment by Jerry 09.27.07 @ 2:51 pmOk folks! Its October and I have not see any sign of this phone from VZW. I have highly anticipated this phone, reading everything I can on the web. I will hold out this month with my 6700 that I love. But I feel like as soon as I give up, the phone will be released. Shame on you VZW!!!!
Comment by Richard 10.01.07 @ 1:37 pmAlright guys, i have done some research and i found a site that says when xv6800 is being released as well as other phones that they have comming out, The Expected release date is Oct, i was going to upgrade next month, to a 6700 from my treo but i am deffinetly waiting for this phone..I will even pay extra if it reuires..I hope this helps, and i hope this info is correct.
Comment by Moises 10.02.07 @ 7:05 pmI think an October release is fairly likely, but I’m not holding my breath. We’ve had a few “confirmed” dates before that turned out to be false alarms.
I’m waiting to see if the AT&T Tilt releases October 5. That phone looks slightly more capable and has the angled screen when open. I’d prefer the Verizon network, though.
Comment by rogerd 10.02.07 @ 7:37 pmI was wondering, does anyone know, what i can expect the price to be?
Comment by Moises 10.03.07 @ 4:29 pmAT&T is supposedly introducing the Tilt at $299, although the store couldn’t confirm that. In fact, the sales guy was dubious, noting that the older 8525 sells for $450 right now. I don’t think Verizon will be able to go higher than the Tilt’s eventual price.
Comment by rogerd 10.05.07 @ 9:22 pmI love my 6700 and have been waiting to upgrade to the 6800. Unfortunately a few days ago the audio stopped working on my 6700, would only work with Bluetooth. I thought “great excuse to upgrade now to the 6800″ which I have been eagerly awaiting. Went to the Verizon store but they still could not give me a release date on the 6800 so I had to get a replacement for the 6700. Pretty hassel free and a modest replacement fee required but I would have preferred to get the 6800. It is a great phone, has everything and more than the Iphone. I don’t understand why Verizon has not promoted this device more. They have a great device and don’t know how to market it. Oh well, I’ll just keep waiting for the 6800. I hope it is released soon.
Comment by Ed Fitz 10.15.07 @ 4:37 pmGood evening…
I have been hearing so many conflicting reports now. Do you by any chance have any new information that would be usefull?
Comment by Moises 10.16.07 @ 7:08 pmI think that Verizon wants us to be so invested in this phone that by the time it actually comes out, even if there are several better phones on the market, we will force ourselves to buy it for sanities sake…
Comment by Andy 10.17.07 @ 1:14 amOk … I dont work for Sprint or Verizon, but I know some people that work for each. Verizon wont release the phone until the bugs are all worked out. Sprint doesn’t care about the bugs. And for the LOVE OF GOD … DONT BUY AN IPHONE!!!
Comment by DJ 10.17.07 @ 8:32 amOh … and I bet that the cost is $300
Comment by DJ 10.17.07 @ 8:33 amSorry about the multiple posts … You can put WM6 on the xv6700 by the way. At that point, the only 6800 advantage is EVDO RevA
Comment by DJ 10.17.07 @ 8:34 amI almost bought a 6700 yesterday, there was one in stock…and none in stock in several of the other SF Bay Area stores. The clerk was kind enough to tell me that the 6800 is coming out, he has seen it, and that he could not give me a date, but that he “thinks” it is soon. He stated it would be surely released before the holidays….but wouldn’t give me a date. He told me not to buy the 6700 I had planned to buy yesterday because I’d be sorry when I saw the 6800 on the shelves….
Comment by rachelle 10.18.07 @ 1:02 pmWell everyone there is still no official release date but atleast verizon is now admitting to a release and exsistence of this phone
Comment by Moises 10.18.07 @ 7:24 pmIs anybody else skeptical about this phone even being a Verizon option? On there website they have featured 4 new phones coming out “soon”. Even one that looks totally like a rip off of the IPhone, the LG Voyager. I’m growing more impatient and even sure that this phone has seen better days, why bring it out now? VZW miss their chance to bring this out(1 1/2 years ago!) on time. Fuck you Verizon, Im going to Sprint! eh… I’ll wait one more month.
Comment by Richard 10.22.07 @ 4:12 pmOk everyone, verzion has officially said they are going to release the XV6800 among other phones, so hi means they are acknowledgeing the phone..hre is the linkto the real VZW Press release
http://news.vzw.com/news/2007/10/pr2007-10-18b.html
Comment by Moises 10.22.07 @ 4:38 pmApparently I was very wrong in my last thread, ill eat my own shit in pity.
http://news.vzw.com/news/2007/10/pr2007-10-18b.html
My new every two is available this month, and I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a smart phone. Looking at the phones available, I’m torn between the new Samsung SCH-i760 already for sale on internet and the XV6800. Of course I’m leaning toward the 6800. The reps at my VZW store are telling me mid November for a release date. I’m detecting a pattern. Am I going to end up like the rest of you waiting month after month for the phone to come out or am I going to break down and get the Samsung…. any advice?
Comment by Andy 10.24.07 @ 11:50 amTake a look at these recent photos of the XV6800. Bad news… It’s blue! It’s something I can get over, but for professionals considering purchasing it in November or whenever the hell they release it, it looks like a frickin GameBoy
http://mobilitytoday.com/news/fall_lineup_verizon_att.html
Comment by Andy 10.29.07 @ 12:59 pmI found this link. This is the new XV6800. Looks a lot better than the other one going around that has a blueish trim to it.
What do y’all think. I think I will be getting this one for sure. I almost jumped ship but finally came to realize that Verizon has always giving me good reception. I have yet to drop a call. Can’t wait until this comes out.
Comment by P213 10.29.07 @ 1:56 pmI don’t know. It seems like I’ve waited way to long for this phone. Sorta too little too late for me. AT&T offers INCLUDED unlimited data into thier iPhone plans, my wife can get her Sony Ericsson… I don’t have to put up with a phone company who is so narrow minded that I have to hack my 6700 just to get Java running.
Comment by Jeff 10.29.07 @ 3:56 pmP213, do you have an idea as to how recent that photo is? I’ve seen so many different photos of how the thing is expected to look, I don’t know what to believe anymore. On the VZW press release it says “Dressed in blue.” I agree that Verizon has good reception. If it looks like the one you’re showing us… Great! Otherwise, I think Verizon will have made a huge mistake making it look like a toy. I guess we’ll see soon enough…
Comment by Andy 10.30.07 @ 9:15 amAndy, I have no idea how recent that photo is. I have been looking for pics of the XV6800 for 2 - 3 weeks and the blue trimmed one is all I would find. All the comments I have read say that the model with the blue trim is the model that was going to be released awhile back. Let’s hope verizon makes a change and goes with the one in the link I posted. That would be a lot better. Not as nice as the Tilt (two co-workers have it and it is awesome) but acceptable. I also heard the XV6800 would go on sale online on Nov. 2nd and in stores Nov. 16th. Here is the link where I read about the release date…
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10175
Comment by P213 10.30.07 @ 10:06 amI really think it will be the same style as the Sprint Mogul and Alltell PPC6800. Same style different name for the different carrier.
Comment by P213 10.30.07 @ 3:32 pmI hope its the one that sprint/nextel has, it looks sweet! and the the thumbwheel would also be a plus. As for the blue one, not to excited for that. So hurry up VZW and get’r done!
Comment by Richard 10.31.07 @ 4:18 pmI went to a Verizon store this morning and asked to see the Samsung i760 and also asked about the XV6800. The lady at the store said she did not know the release date for the XV6800 but said that it was showing on Verizon’s brochure. She gave me a brochure they had at the store and there it was, the XV6800 just like the one on engadget with blue trim and flat keys. To tell you the truth they actually took a better pic of it compared to the one on Engadget. It actually doesn’t look too bad. BUT… no release date posted on it. It just says COMING SOON!. Well if the rumor is true, we should see it online tomorrow. It’s time for a new phone so I am a little exited. I messed with the Samsung at another V store and it’s not bad. But I hate the keypad on the front. Anyway. I’m out. Hopefully it will be online tomorrow.
Comment by P213 11.01.07 @ 6:37 pmLOL. I guess I should proofread my messages. LOL
Comment by P213 11.01.07 @ 6:40 pmToday is the day! If the predictions are true, we’ll see it available on the verizon site…. anybody care to place a friendly wager??? j/k.
Comment by Andy 11.02.07 @ 8:56 amBeen looking at the site all day. No signs of it. Just called the store in Berkeley, CA. Clerk there said they have no idea when it’s coming out. (same old stupid story). Anybody know anything different?
Comment by bob 11.02.07 @ 7:21 pmWell I guess not! Haha
Comment by Richard 11.03.07 @ 3:18 pmDoes anyone know where i can write verizon and complain, this is gettingreally ridiculous..They need to be more proffesional
Comment by Moises 11.03.07 @ 6:45 pmI spoke with Both a Verizon store in MA and Verizon Customer Support. Both confrirmed that the 6800 will be release on 11/18/2007. I have one on hold.
Comment by John 11.05.07 @ 12:20 pmBS
Comment by Richard 11.06.07 @ 3:56 pmSprint already launched the 6900 and Verizon is still testing the 6800??????? I am getting frustrated here. I might just wait for the Samsung F700. Oh, but that means Verizon might not release it until ‘09. COME ON VERIZON!!! WTF MAN!!!!
Comment by P213 11.06.07 @ 4:33 pmThe midwest stores (at least in Bolingbrook, IL) don’t yet have the 6800 on their lists (and subsequently arn’t accepting pre-orders or holds…)
Comment by Andy 11.06.07 @ 5:44 pmI also asked here in the central coast of California. They dont have the phone on there list either, but dont sell the 6700 anymore either.
Comment by Richard 11.07.07 @ 11:21 amI’m not sure how much longer i can wait for this phone!!! i’m going crazy; everyday my coworker and good friend of mine is showing me a new program he downloaded onto his iphone. you guys remember “mike tyson’s punch out,” on nintendo? i played it for about a hour yesterday on his iphone. i’m real close to breaking down and buying it!
Comment by luke 11.07.07 @ 3:14 pmI saw the 6800 in the new brochure at the retail outlet in Northern California near me. In the picture it has a nice holiday bow on it leftover from last year’s holidays when it was rumored to be coming out. Anyway, the guy in the store says he hears around Thanksgiving.
Comment by Jonathan 11.07.07 @ 4:42 pmSome stores in Orange County, California still have the 6700 out on display. Not looking good from my perspective.
Comment by Andy 11.08.07 @ 9:47 amTake a look at this thread from howard’s forum. Somebody is claiming to have gotten the rare opportunity to play around with a real live XV6800! There are some nice pics to wet your whistle. The blue isn’t as “GameBoy-ish” in these pictures. Also, it seems as though something actually comes up on the VZW website when you search for XV6800… just a link to the October press release. Enjoy the pics!
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1272861
I saw a working version of the VX6800 (blue) at a tech conference in Vegas last month (Citrix Iforum) The vendor was showing various cell phones and the Citrix client running on them. He said that he had received it about 2 months ago, was fully functional and loved it. I picked it up - it seems to weigh about 1/2 of the 6700, although it could just feel that way to me. Screen looked great, but didn’t get any time to play with it.
Comment by Bobby J 11.09.07 @ 2:39 pmA Verizon rep just responded by e-mail to an inquiry I made through a link on Verizon’s Oct 18 news release about the XV6800. She explained that release dates are moving targets for myriad reasons from the number of products in testing phases, to tooling up support, training sales staff, to inventory arriving on time from manufactures. That said, she said that Verizon is announcing the launch to their sales staff today (Nov 16) or Monday (Nov 19) latest, and to look for the product launch shortly after Thanksgiving. That’s the first definitive answer I’ve received, and I’ve been asking since March, like many of you. Keep you’re eyes open for this serious new business tool.
Comment by Gary 11.16.07 @ 4:25 pmDo a search on the verizon site on xv6800 - can see a pic, getting closer
Comment by WD 11.16.07 @ 5:20 pmRetail outlet employee was able to pull up dates and pictures on the terminal at the store today. 11/28/07 b2b 12/5/07 retail. One picture showed the back of the phone and the back of the case is rubberized. The pix on his terminal looked pretty slick.
Comment by J 11.17.07 @ 12:46 amNovember 28th confirmed. Just got word from my VZW B2B Telesales rep. Looks like this is going to really happen.
Comment by Kris Harness 11.17.07 @ 11:10 amThe release - may get puched back even further with Verizon trying to sell there o-so-popular Voyager. People are never going to learn - like iphone never buy 1st Gen Products right out the gates. lol. Whenever VZ get there ish together and release the xv6800 I’m getting it.
Comment by PEDEOHH 11.20.07 @ 8:13 amI am very interested in a new phone. But like the gentleman said I am not able or willing to wait. Which puts me in a bind because I am really settling for something else, something I really do not want. I need the ability to read email send email with the use of a full keyboard and the at a glance large screen. The ability to open attachments and view them fully. Well nothing I can do about it though I just can’t wait forever. Thanks Verizon wireless.
Comment by AJ 11.23.07 @ 10:05 amI went to a Verizon store on Wednesday to check out the Voyager for my wife. I asked the guy about the XV6800 while I was there and he said it had been pushed to Jan. Well I did the math and if the XV6800 is going to be $500 with a 2 year contract plus $250 for the VOyager (for my wife) I think I’d rather go to AT&T and get me me a Tilt and a new Razr2 for my wife for less than that. I get a 20% discount from verizon and AT&T will give me 15%. AT&T has a cheaper data plan and as far as coverage goes, it’s the same. I know people that have AT&T and they have never had problems with AT&T where I live. I don’t travel much so it’s not a biggie. Come Dec. 23rd I will go to AT&T and get me the Tilt. Merry Christmas to me.
I would think they would throw out the phones at the same time. You have people that like multimedia phones and those that like smartphones. There’s people that like just plain ol phones. No matter what, you will sell. Stop spending too much money on advertisement. These products will sell no matter what.
Thanks Verizon
.
Your loyal customer for the past 5 yeasrs.
Maybe I am just going off because I am pi$$ed that the phone is not coming out soon. But I have decided that I will wait until Dec. 23. YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED VERIZON!
Wait, let me read two more forums and see if there are any new news before I send this post…..Well some guy said he ordered two and that Vz would ship them over night on Wed. Nov. 28th but when asked about details he never responded. Oh, well.

Seems that there are reports of a Dec release in stores and a wednesday nov 28th online release.
Anyone else able to verify?

For the latest info. on the 6800, I’ve been reading the giant thread at the link below. It looks like some folks already got theirs through the B2E channel. Consumer launch on the website appears to be tomorrow. Here’s the link; enjoy:

Comment by J 11.27.07 @ 3:09 pmIt is finaly here but it will not let me purchase the phone without adding the 49.95/month data plan to my account. Does anybody know if this is some kind of new Verizon policy?
Comment by Joe 11.28.07 @ 9:07 amCongratulations everyone! the wait is over! The year and a half suffering is over!!!! Enjoy!
Comment by Richard 11.28.07 @ 2:10 pmI received the 6800 yesterday and I may return it today after finding my Outlook won’t sync due to the version-2000 not being compatible with the latest Active Sync. I accepted the unlimited data plan when I ordered and then called and cancelled it when the phone arrived. No problem. Still wish they had provided an updated Outlook with the software.
Comment by MIke 11.30.07 @ 2:58 pmI had the samsung i760 for 30 days and used the phone extensively. I do about 5000 minutes a month and like the phone but the down down were many. But the phone itself had many easy ways to use it. It was learner friendly. Unfortunatle it locked up 2 or 3 times a day and I had to reboot it to allow it to function properly. Reception was not so good as clients were often asking me to speak up or repeat my statement.
I switched a week ago to the xv6800 and the change was well worth it. Number one is the reception is noticeably better and it hooks up the best of any phone with my blue tooth 700. Some people cannot tell I am on a blue tooth.
Have not had to reboot yet but the learning curve is a little more complicated for me but I am not real sharp with smart phones. Not like the dedicated smart phone thinkers. Wish it was a little faster because it does not process as fast as I would like but it is the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. Its a very good phone. Nice smart phone features. All in all excellent. I rate it very high.
I bought a xv6800 a week ago, took it back the next day, up to 2:30am with verizon tech people could not get it to connect to vista laptop…
Bought another yesterday and have spent 6 to 8 hours with verizon tech people, can’t get this one to work either… email freezes up for hours or will not work at all… Vista refuses to recognize the phone, therefore it can’t be synced… verizon techs finally gave up, there are a number key features that refuse to work at all & verizon does not have a clue how to fix any of them… it is a terrible device and have spent over 20 hours trying to make it work… A friend of mine has had his two weeks and he is still trying to get to work, but verizon can’t his working either… Bottom line answer from them is it is Microsofts fault…
Comment by doug 12.21.07 @ 4:01 amI went last week to a Verizon Store to see if they would upgrade my 6700 to WM6 and was told that they were not going to do it.
I started with Verizon with the Samsung I600 running WSP2002 and they were all about the upgrade to 2003.
I signed up for email notification of new phones through Verizon’s webpage and guess what?… I didn’t even know the 6800 existed until I went in to inquire about the WM6 upgrade and there it was sitting pretty as can be on the shelf…
I too am disgusted and tired of Verizon’s secrecy… too many times their on-line support techs have given me one story only to be contradicted by the store staff… only to be contradicted by their webpage and press releases… they like many companies should be wary of alienating large chunks of customer base especially with the advent of the iPhone and the newest cutting edge tech coming out of Europe and Asia.
I will end up getting a 6800, give my 6700 to my wife and renew my contract for two FINAL years (dependant upon Verizon loosening their sphincter)
but I am one of the weary, wondering how they will sh*t on me then when/if they do.

I’ve been waiting for this phone since March. I wasn’t going to go with the iphone and switch carriers - but this is truly ridiculous. Verizon is simply the absolute worst at releasing phones. And the phones they do release are bulky, clumsy, and redundant. They don’t do anything new or different - they aren’t revolutionary. They are all the same junk. I was excited as well about the possibility of actually having a decent smartphone with Verizon - but this has gone on too long. Verizon - you dropped the ball - and I’m more than sure that of the approximated 500,000 NEW subscribers to at&t over the past 2 weeks…the majority of them YOU probably lost.
