Web applications are dependent upon an extremely antiquated protocol and this needs to change. We need a completely new standard that completely abandons stateless, clunky and over-simplistic HTML/AJAX/HTTP.

Adobe Flex might be a step in the right direction. It's just a shame that it is proprietary technology and favors the graphic artist over the software developer. Sometimes my clients are not interested in any eye-candy what-so-ever and would be content with a text-based user interface.

It will be interesting to see what the upcoming Yahoo/Bing combination will offer in this area. Yahoo's current CEO went on record recently proclaiming that Yahoo will overtake Google in the people search arena.

Thanks so much for the comparison between Pubcon and SXSW--I was very curious about the former! And I'm really glad you enjoyed our panel :-). FWIW, I was the moderator of the session (I'd hate anyone to confuse my measly presentation for the amazing work Cliff did)...but that's neither here nor there :-). Have an awesome rest of your weekend!

Great summary as I was both at PubCon & SXSW as well.

I area I would disagree is the PubCon party scene, although there was nothing organized at night there was always a defacto party group each night that included myself, Kate Morris, Kristy Bolsinger, Scott Polk, Jeff Randall, Joe Morin, Gregg Hilferding, Jon Henshaw, Krista Neher, Joanna Lord, and of course the PubCon party sheriff & part time Canadian Spy - Lyndon Reid.

Well, even if you assume that the SXSW population skews to Firefox, is it still good design practice to block IE? If I'm designing a site, I think it should render in an acceptable way for any browser or resolution with more than a few percent share. Only the arrogant tell their users how to browse.

Those attending SWSX are more than likely smart enough to not use Internet Explorer. It the audience, not the over all browser market.
